New York City Rescue Mission

The New York Rescue Mission is a non-profit that helps provide homeless men with substance abuse issues, emergency services such as food, clothing, shelter and counseling. It is the first homeless shelter in NYC to serve this segment of the homeless community. Detailed their services, and talked about the organization’s growth to become the model for all such Mission’s in the country. Spotlighted their 3rd Annual SOUPer Bowl Week, which kicks off Monday February 1st, and goes through February 7th. All week long, the community, along with celebrities and chefs including Mark Gastineau and Katie Lee, will serve soup to the community, all culminating on Super Bowl Sunday when dozens of New York’s homeless will assemble at the Mission to have dinner and then watch the big game. The World Food Programme, formed in 1962, is part of the United Nation’s and is the world’s largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide. The objectives of the organization include helping to reduce chronic hunger and malnutrition around the world, and restoring and rebuilding lives after emergencies. World Food Programme was among the first to help Haiti after the earthquake. Discussed their many efforts, in the aftermath, including providing 3 million meals, nutrition biscuits and water to the people in the region. The American Red Cross was founded in 1881, and is the nation’s premier emergency response organization. Spotlighted their recovery efforts in Haiti after the earthquake, and stressed the fact that the best way to help is not to travel to the region or send clothes, but to donate much needed money. The organization is working closely with the Haitian Red Cross, and other organizations to ensure that the money will go directly to the needs the people, and where it can do the most good. Volunteers of America is one of the nation's oldest and largest faith-based human service organizations, and serves more than 1,800,000 people each year. Volunteers of America-Greater New York is the largest, with close to 70 programs in the tri state area including the Mid-Hudson Valley region, Northern New Jersey and Southwestern Connecticut. Volunteers of America is one of the largest private providers of services to the homeless in the area.
